Reading Group

“Reading is essential for those who seek to rise above the ordinary.”

– Jim Rohn

Our Reading Group is an initiative to stay up to date with the latest advancements in computational drug discovery, cheminformatics, and molecular modeling. We meet regularly to discuss recent scientific publications, exchange insights, and explore how these findings can contribute to our ongoing research.

Meeting format

The group meets biweekly, with each session featuring a speaker who presents a selected research paper. The meeting structure is as follows:

  • Paper presentation (30 minutes): The speaker provides an overview of the paper, covering its background, research motivation, key findings, methodologies, and implications for drug discovery.
  • Critical insights (5-10 minutes): The speaker shares key takeaways, strengths and limitations of the study, potential future directions, and relevance to our research projects.
  • Group discussion (20-25 minutes): Open discussion on the broader impact of the research, possible applications, technical challenges, and connections to related work.
  • Active participation is encouraged, and members are welcome to ask questions and share thoughts throughout the session.
Speaker rotation & Paper selection
  • We follow a rotating speaker system, ensuring that each member presents 1-3 times per year.
  • Papers should be recent (published within the last two years) and come from reputable sources in medicinal chemistry, cheminformatics, molecular modeling, and AI-driven drug discovery.
    • Journals: Nature, Science, Cell, NEJM, JAMA, Lancet, PNAS, ACS family…
    • Conferences: GRC-CADD, ACS, EFMC, ICCS, MGMS, ICML, NeurIPS, ICLR, ISMB…
  • We prioritize impactful and thought-provoking studies, regardless of publication venue, including preprints (e.g., ChemRxiv, bioRxiv, medRxiv).
  • One week before the meeting, the speaker selects a research paper and submits it to the group coordinator, who then shares it with all members. All participants are expected to read the paper in advance to facilitate a more engaging and insightful discussion.
Meeting schedule
  • Time: Every other Thursday, 4:30 – 5:30 PM.
  • Location: Hybrid format – online via Microsoft Teams and in-person at Room 314.
